Marker Map Maker

Put places on a map with an icon, an emoji or a photo, a label and a popup for each one. Upload a spreadsheet and publish the map for free.

What is a Marker Map?

A marker map places one symbol on the map for each row of your data, at the latitude and longitude you give it. The symbol can be a circle, an emoji or an image, chosen for each category, so a reader can tell the kinds of place apart without a key. Each marker can carry a name beside it and a popup with more detail. A number column can scale the markers so their area follows the value, and an inset globe shows where the view sits. It suits offices, stores, events and any list of places.

When to use a Marker Map

  • Your data is a list of places

Stores, offices, events and trade partners all fit a table with one row per place.

  • Categories need to be told apart

Give each category its own emoji or image, and the legend and map explain themselves.

  • Readers want detail on demand

A popup shows a name, a figure and a link for each marker without crowding the map.

  • Exact positions matter

Markers sit at the coordinates you give, so places stay where readers expect them.

When not to use a Marker Map

  • You want to shade regions

Totals by country or state belong on a choropleth, not on markers.

  • You have thousands of points

Markers overlap and hide each other. Use a heatmap or a density map.

  • You only have place names

Markers need coordinates. Add a latitude and longitude column first.

  • You need to show flows between places

Use an arc map to join an origin and a destination.

The parts of a Marker Map

Markers
One icon for each row, placed by latitude and longitude.

The name beside each marker. Names that overlap are hidden until you hover.
Legend
Shows the icon or colour that stands for each category.
Popup
A card with the details of a marker when you hover over it.
Inset globe
A small globe showing where the current view sits.
Source line
A linked credit for your data under the map.

Common Marker Map mistakes

Swapping latitude and longitude

Latitude runs from -90 to 90 and longitude from -180 to 180. A swapped pair lands in the wrong place.

Leaving blank coordinates

Rows without usable coordinates are dropped and counted under the map. Fill them in or remove them.

Using too many icons

More than five or six symbols become hard to tell apart. Group the rare ones.

Crowding the labels

Dense areas hide names. Turn labels off or let hover reveal them.
