Qu’est-ce qu’un Lollipop Chart ?

A lollipop chart is a bar chart with the bar reduced to a stem and a dot. The ink falls where the value is, not across the whole distance to it, which keeps a long list of categories easy to read and makes small differences between large values easier to see. Each category gets a dot at its value, joined to the baseline by a line. A second column can size the dots, and a group column can colour them and build a legend. It suits rankings, survey results and any comparison across many categories.

Quand utiliser un Lollipop Chart

  • You have many categories

Thin stems leave room to read twenty or thirty rows that would feel heavy as bars.

  • The values are all large

Dots at the end of a stem show small gaps between big numbers better than a block of ink.

  • You want a second measure

Size each dot by another column, such as a sample size or a population.

  • You want a lighter look

A lollipop chart reads as less dense than a bar chart and sits well in a report or on a page.

Quand éviter un Lollipop Chart

  • You have only two or three values

A plain bar chart is just as clear and more familiar.

  • The axis does not start at zero

A stem implies length from the baseline, so a cropped axis can mislead.

  • You need to show parts of a whole

A stacked bar or a donut chart shows composition. This chart compares separate values.

  • You are comparing two values per category

A dumbbell chart joins a start and an end value more clearly.

Erreurs courantes avec un Lollipop Chart

Cropping the axis

Start the value axis at zero so the length of each stem tells the truth.

Leaving the categories unsorted

A ranked order is far easier to read. Use the sort setting in the Orientation tab.

Dots that are too big

Large dots hide the stem and cover neighbours. Lower the radius in the Dots tab.

Using too many colours

One colour per category adds noise. Colour by a meaningful group, or use a single colour.
