O que é um Calendar Heatmap?

A calendar heatmap lays every day of the year out as a small square, arranged in weeks so each column is a week and each row is a weekday. Colour carries the value: a darker square is a busier day. It is the shape made familiar by contribution graphs, and it earns its place because it shows rhythm. Weekday against weekend, a seasonal swell, a streak of busy days or a long gap are all visible at a glance, where a line chart of the same numbers would flatten them into one wiggle. Days with no reading are drawn in a separate colour, so a missing day is never mistaken for a day with a value of zero.

Quando usar um Calendar Heatmap

  • You have one number per day

Commits, sales, steps, support tickets, rainfall. A single date and a single value per row is all the template needs.

  • You care about rhythm and streaks

The weekly layout makes weekday patterns, busy seasons and unbroken runs of activity easy to spot.

  • You want a year at a glance

Three hundred and sixty-five values fit in a compact strip, with one band for each year in your data.

  • Gaps are part of the story

Days absent from your data are shown in a distinct no-data colour, separate from the low end of the scale.

Quando não usar um Calendar Heatmap

  • You need exact values

Colour is a rough encoding. If readers must compare precise numbers, use a bar or line chart, or a table.

  • Your data is monthly or yearly

One square per day needs daily data. Coarser data is better shown as a column chart or a standard heatmap.

  • You need events on a calendar

This chart colours days by a number. It does not list events or appointments.

  • You have only a few days

A handful of days leaves the grid mostly empty. A small bar chart reads better.

As partes de um Calendar Heatmap

Day squares
One square per day, shaded by its value.

Weekday labels
Mon, Wed and Fri are labelled, which is enough to orient the reader.

Each year in your data gets its own band, stacked top to bottom.

Erros comuns em um Calendar Heatmap

Treating a missing day as zero

Leave days out of the file if you have no reading. The no-data colour keeps them distinct from a real zero.

Letting one outlier set the scale

A single huge day flattens everything else to the palest shade. Set a custom maximum in the Scale tab.

Using an ambiguous date format

A date such as 03/04 can mean two things. ISO dates, such as 2024-04-03, are the safest.

Cramming too many years in

Each year adds a band. Many years make the squares small, so show the span that matters.
