A horserace chart is an animated line chart built to answer one question: who is in front, and how did that change? Each contender gets a line that grows from left to right across a run of stages, such as days, rounds or quarters. The head of every line carries a marker, a live rank and a score, so you can read the order at any moment. A play bar runs the race, and viewers can scrub back and forth. It suits medal tables, polls, league standings and market share.
Who leads, who overtakes and who falls back is easy to follow when the lines race.
Medals after each day, points after each match and sales after each quarter all fit.
Flags, logos and portraits turn a line into a contender the audience recognises.
Autoplay, looping and a scrubber make it work on a page, in a video and in a presentation.
Labels collide once the pack is thick. Filter to the top ones or use a plain line chart.
A table or a bar chart is better when readers must look up a number.
A race needs motion. A static export shows only the stage you stopped on.
A dumbbell or slope chart shows a before and after more clearly.
De una hoja de cálculo a un gráfico publicado, paso a paso.
The lines expect running totals. If your columns are increments, switch on the accumulate setting.
The columns are read left to right, so sort them in running order before you bind them.
A crowded finish hides the labels. Limit the race to the top contenders.
A missing or broken image falls back to a plain circle. Check the links in the data.
