How to Create a Countdown Timer
A step by step walkthrough for building a live countdown to any date in PlotSet, with styled digits, an optional milestone list and an embed code you can paste anywhere.
Unos 6 minutosA live clock ticking toward your date, ready to embed on a page, is what you will have. You choose the target, the units and the look, and can add a short list of milestones beneath it.
Expect about six minutes. The clock works from the date alone, so a spreadsheet is optional and only needed for milestones.
Los datos que necesitas
Optional. One row per milestone with a label and a date, and an optional note. With no data, the clock still runs from the target date you set.
The first column is the milestone name, the second its date and the third an optional note.
ISO dates, such as 2027-01-01, are the safest. Rows whose date cannot be read are still listed, sorted last.
The target can come from the first, next or last milestone instead of the date you set by hand.
Milestones are shown as a stacked list, not placed to scale along a timeline.
- 01
Open the Countdown template
From the PlotSet dashboard, start a new project and choose Countdown from the Other category. It loads with a sample event and a short milestone list.

Set the target date
In the Target tab enter the year, month, day, hour, minute and second. Choose whether the time is read in the viewer's local time, in UTC or at a fixed offset.

Choose the units
In the Units tab pick which of years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds to show. Two or three units read best.
- 04
Add milestones, or clear them
Import a CSV or .xlsx file, paste rows from a spreadsheet, or connect a Google Sheet. If you do not want a milestone list, clear the sample rows.

Check the column bindings
Confirm which column holds the milestone label, the date and the note. This is usually right automatically when the headers are clear.

Style the digits and tiles
The Numbers, Unit labels, Tiles, Layout and Separators tabs control fonts, colours, boxes, spacing and the arrangement of the clock.
- 07
Write the lead-in and the expiry
Add a sentence above or below the clock, and in the When time runs out tab choose whether it stops, counts up or shows a message.
- 08
Publish and embed
Publish for a live clock and copy the embed code from the Share dialog. Check the time zone once more before you share it.

Pin the time zone
For a global event, interpret the target as UTC or a fixed offset so every viewer counts to the same moment.
Show fewer units
Days, hours and minutes are usually enough. Fewer units means bigger digits.
Plan for the expiry
Decide in advance whether the clock should stop, count up or show a message when the date arrives.
Use a progress ring
An optional bar or ring shows how much of the wait has passed.
Errores comunes al hacer un Countdown
The clock shows zeros
The target is in the past, so it has expired. Set a future date or change the expired behaviour.
Readers see different times
The target is being read in each viewer's local time. Switch to UTC or a fixed offset.
The milestone list is empty
Filter settings may hide past rows. Check the Milestones tab and the dates in your file.
The digits are clipped
A large custom digit size can overflow a small chart. Reduce it, or keep auto-fit on.

Countdown: preguntas frecuentes
No. The clock runs from the date you set. A spreadsheet only adds the milestone list.
